I just want to share this reflections to my beloved embi family. My friends know that I always reflect and plan the next 2-5 years of my life/career at least 1-2 years before I enter the new phase of my life/career (but of course this plan is flexible). [FROM my career in Insular Life TO my teaching career in UPLB... FROM my plans to rise up from being an Instrutor 1 for five years TO finishing my MSc degree in UPD... Then now FROM being a PhD student in a foreign land TO my come back to UPLB with full of hopes and dreams for the Math Division.]
This diagram summarizes the unified themes that will govern my UPLB career in the next 2-5 years. I always tell myself to evolve and improve --- be a leader of myself so I can lead other people. [I started in UPLB as a novice teacher with zero experience but I tried to be better every semester (I always remind myself about the negative comments about my teaching style and treat them as constructive criticism). I started as an instructor wishing to do research because I realized the importance of generating new knowledge, but there was limited mentoring scheme. There's no other way but to double my effort to learn how to do research --- collaboration is one of the strategies that I did. However, there is another part of my UPLB career that I need to improve --- EXTENSION. I will devote part of my time and resources to serve the people outside the UPLB community (currently I am entering into talks with Community Hopes Alternatives CHAI for social entrepreneurship). Well, my reason for this is not just because of work, but because my heart tells me to do it.]
A holistic professor devoted to Instruction, Research and Extension (they are interrelated and often overlap) is my dream. It seems impossible to divide myself to do these three... of course! I don't want to work half-baked. That's why I specifically decided what part of these three will be my focus (in the diagram, refer to those in parentheses). All-in-all, my general strategy is COLLABORATION. In intruction, I am not alone --- I know I have the UPLB and embi family. For research, I will continue collaborating with my collaborators in Philippines, Japan and US. For extension, I am also looking for collaborators (CHAI and Pahinungod?). AND of course, the one that will unify my Instruction, Research and Extension efforts is ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP. An organization without good administrative leadership is doomed --- indeed! An active organization needs to be good at Planning, Implementation and Evaluation of programs and projects with human relations and talent development at the center.
I share the Wisconsin Idea as my vision and action statement: “I shall never be content until the beneficent influence of the University reaches every home in the state”
The core values that will guide my career are:
7) Leadership (with Empowerment, Accountability, Courage, and Humility)
10) Social Responsibility
